Yuletide design: top tips on dressing your festive table

As Christmas fast approaches, many are starting to think about how to bring some festive cheer to their homes – and, more specifically, their Christmas dining table. Here, we speak to Stacey Sibley, Creative Director of Alexander James Interiors, to get some top design tips for the festive season:

1. Magical metallics

Metallics are always popular in interiors, and there’s no better time to bring this trend into the home than at Christmas. Both matt and high shine looks work well, particularly gold and silver. At Kingswood, we’ve dressed a table with gold ceramic Christmas tree decorations, complemented by gold cutlery and napkin rings – a simple but effective way to add a little magic to the table.

2. Dare to bare

While a crisp white linen tablecloth always looks fabulous on a formal table, keeping the table top exposed is also an increasingly popular trend. The natural wood of a table can look really striking and works particularly well with rustic or Scandi-inspired interiors. Pair with shimmery gold for a truly luxe look.

3. Festive florals

No Christmas table is complete without a festive floral arrangement. At Kingswood, we created a central table display using traditional seasonal colours: a burgundy and green arrangement, set within a gold vase. Make sure it has a wintery twist, by using plants and flowers such as poinsettia – the ultimate yuletide flower – or mistletoe for a romantic touch.

4. Add a little sparkle

Another key element in creating the perfect Christmas atmosphere is lighting. Candles always look magical, whether it’s a sparkling tea light placed by each plate, large church-style pillar candles, or something in between. For a more contemporary twist, use fairy lights intertwined with foliage, and present in a crystal or facetted glass vase, or on a mirrored surface, for added sparkle.

5. It’s the little things

The devil is in the detail when it comes to the Christmas table. Think about the personal elements you could add, such as beautifully hand-written place names, or a little keepsake for each person, to make your guests feel truly special. At Kingswood, we added a bespoke bauble to each table setting – a gift guests will enjoy year after year.
