Millgate In The Environment

Millgate Homes is committed to building on brown field and previously used land. Currently 100% of our developments are being built on brown field sites, a figure well in excess of government guidelines.

We are conscious that the building of new homes can be intrusive and we are always aware of the surrounding community together with existing trees, hedging, architectural and heritage details. Environmental impact studies are conducted before we move onto a site. Tree surveys are always conducted and even if a tree is deemed expendable or is diseased we always replace it with suitably mature specimens. The maintenance of established landscaping is a priority for us.

Wildlife is carefully protected and where necessary is re-sited or re-housed with the help and advice of the relevant experts.

Consultation with the local community is important to us. We endeavour to keep neighbours informed of all activity and any noise or action that creates mud and dust is carefully controlled to minimize disruption. Measures taken include regular use of road sweepers, restricted working hours and open communication with local people. Traffic management is key to the safe and considerate operation of a building site.

Waste materials are kept to a minimum. Our first option is always to reclaim or re-cycle. New timber obtained from sustainable resources and attenuation systems to lower levels of storm water run off are just two examples of the methods used to limit impact on environment.

Millgate Homes works closely with planners to ensure development is compatible with local requirements. A great deal of effort goes into using materials that suit the local vernacular. This often involves spending more money on bricks, for example, to ensure our homes look as though they have grown out of the landscape rather than being imposed upon it. Where slate roofing is required, real slate is used rather than imitation.

We are not pioneers of new technology but we are well placed to take quick advantage of measures that are developing to further reduce the impact of the house building process on the environment.
