A sporting chance…

Two table tennis clubs and a talented young snowboarder from the Wokingham area have been given a boost for the New Year, thanks to bursaries awarded at the annual Wokingham District Sports Council Awards. Local developer Millgate Homes funded the bursaries as part of their ongoing support of the Council, as Director David Simpson explains:

“Millgate is a keen supporter of grass roots sports, particularly those which involve young people in our community. The winners of the first bursaries are very worthy, and we hope that the funds help them to achieve their goals in 2007.”

The first bursary of £500 was awarded to ‘IMPACT’, the Institute of Match Play And Coaching Techniques, an organisation which aims to encourage youngsters to take up table tennis and reach their full potential, be it as a hobby or as a serious competitor. Coach Alan Dines who runs the IMPACT scheme explains what the funding boost will mean to the organisation:

“We plan to use the £500 to procure a new ‘robot’ training device, which shoots balls at set speeds and spins across a table, enabling players to practice and refine their technique. This is an essential tool for us and one which will be used by players of every level - from 5 and 6 year olds starting out, who need a consistent service in order to build their confidence, to our most talented competition players who will use the device to hone their skills.”

Another winner in the night was Early-Based Our Lady of Peace Table Tennis Club, which scooped £300. Meanwhile, British snowboarding squad member Sam Cullum, whose goals include the 2010 Winter Olympics, received £200 – Sam explains what the bursary will mean for him in 2007:

“It was a great surprise to win the £200 especially as I was unable to attend the awards ceremony due to training for a World Cup comp in Saas Fee, Switzerland.

“This money will help towards entry into the World Cup Competitions, which I have to enter to reach my targets in 2007, 2008 and 2009 to ensure that I achieve my ultimate goal of competing for Great Britain in the 2010 Winter Olympics. As you can imagine it is expensive to chase the snowy conditions and compete around the world, and this bursary will be a great help.”

In addition to the bursaries, Millgate Homes also sponsored the award for the Junior Girls (under 16) category, which was presented to gymnast Louisa Bells in recognition of her outstanding achievements.
